Art Partners’ “Designs on Photography” series continues with a look into the art of Kathryn Kolb at Thomas Deans Fine Art.

Kathryn Kolb’s pioneering work in the genre of landscape photography is rooted in realism but ventures far into the realm of abstract design. Her precise compositions, unusual angles, and harmonious palettes recall contemporary abstract painting, yet her image-making process is simple and straightforward, with no manipulations – the final image appears just as it was seen in the camera.

Kathryn is a naturalist as well as a photographer, and she formed her distinctive vision from the subtle but rich architecture of the Southeast, from remote wilderness to her own back yard. Her complex designs with strong lighting exude a sense of dramatic calm, transcendence, and connection to the natural world, with an additional undercurrent of intimacy that extends beyond the trees and plants that are her subjects.

Having begun her career in photojournalism, Kathryn’s early work appeared in many publications, ranging from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Southline newspapers to magazines such as Smithsonian, Rolling Stone, People, Nature Conservancy, and Orion.

Her fine-art photography has been widely exhibited, including solo shows in Georgia at Fernbank Museum of Natural History, State Botanical Gardens of Georgia, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, and Thomas Deans Fine Art and in Asheville, North Carolina, at Haen Gallery. Her work is included in the collections of the Georgia Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, The Wilderness Society, the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, Goizueta Business School, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia Conservancy, King & Spalding LLP, City of Atlanta, Southern Company, Piedmont Hospital, Emory Children’s Clinic, Calloway Gardens, and many others.
